Beginning Triathlon Training: Some Basic But Important Tips

If you're just beginning triathlon training, you know that in can be daunting, even scary at times. There's so much to train for! Even if you're already good at all three of the sporting events involved, you have probably never had to transition between them before as the stop watches are ticking. And it's likely you've never tried doing them all in succession before.

Those who are just beginning triathlon training and have never done this sport before should follow some basic steps to improve their performance and, even more importantly, minimize the risk of injury or becoming overly fatigued.

First of all, never ignore or neglect the importance of good stretching. It's more important to stretch after you are done your final workout for the session, but if you can stretch both before and after so much the better. Stretching relieves tremendous amounts of stress from your muscles, ligaments, joints, and tendons. Poor stretching habits--such as, not stretching--will leave you far more prone to injury and nagging pains that can really hinder your performance times.

Stretching also makes the muscles, tendons, and ligaments more elastic. This adds power to them, and therefore it lends power to you. You've filled your muscles with more potential energy just waiting to be released, the way you fill a rubber band with extra potential energy when you stretch it back rather than just leave lying limply on the table.

Now, another extremely important thing to keep in mind is that you have to avoid overtraining. This means for you that you must build up gradually to the higher levels of performance. Don't get impatient. Remember that you've got a long way to go to prepare, train, and condition for this great race day. You've got to walk the fine line between pushing your own envelope and keeping yourself in great shape without burnout, injury, psychological discouragement, or peaking before you're supposed to (the day of the race).

Your training goals may call for you to reach the point where you're running 10 miles in one hour or less time. That's great! But, if you've never done more than jog a mile or two, you can't just launch into such a demanding run. Improve your times in the shorter distances first, then build up the lengths you can run at a good pace. And the same principle goes for the swim and the cycling, too.

Get sufficient rest! This may be the worst "sin" of the triathlete during training. The mindset is to go, go, go. But you aren't lazy for taking adequate amounts of rest--you're smart. Your muscles rebuild themselves and your body strengthens itself during your rest periods--not when you're actually working out and training.

Likewise, get the right nutrition. Once you're into your training you're going to be able to eat just about anything you want and still look great. The problem is, although you won't be exactly "unhealthy" for scarfing jelly doughnuts when you're triathlon training, you are going to harm your performance. Stay disciplined with the nutrition.

And finally, get the right equipment. Train with it and plan to use it in the triathlon, too. Don't skimp on the right gear and apparel. Those beginning triathlon training, like those experienced, can't afford to be cheap.
