Why a Triathlon Training Log is Important
A triathlon training log needs to consist of all that he's done in each of the three different events of the sport. By using the log, he can keep track of his progress--always incredibly important--and make notes on things that worked for him and didn't work for him. He can notate when he stuck to his planned training regimen and when he fell away from it.
The purpose of a triathlon training log is multifold. It's like a book of shadows for athletes instead of wizards.
A triathlete wants to be able to show himself his own progress toward his goal, for one thing. When a triathlete keeps a log, he has a record of achievement for those times which inevitably come when he feels down. He can then grab his log, flip through it and observe his own progress, and see that he has been coming along and getting better. When you're deep in the training, it's all too easy to forget how far you've come, all the successes you've had, all the obstacles you've already overcome. But your faithful log will keep your memories and records of your daily achievements alive. You can go back and read it and FEEL again that day in the rain when you did a brick, when you ran eight hard miles after biking 20, and you were wet as a drowned rat and couldn't wait to get back into your car with its heater, to go to your house with its hot shower!
It's very important to remember your success, and just so it's important to remember where you can make improvements. A triathlon training log will consist of notes about how he thinks things could have been done better. If his coach or personal trainer makes any commentaries on how to improve performance, that goes into the log, too. Maybe his trainer tells him he should practice his swim with his fists balled. Maybe he's told to lengthen his stride while running, or told to check out harder up hills. Maybe he's told he needs to take the turns more steeply when cycling. Whatever coaching he's given and whatever thoughts he himself comes up with to improve his performance, he should log them.
That way, he can refer back to the log to see how he's progressed from that point on and tell if his new techniques are working for him. He might also need to remind himself of the details of what he's supposed to be doing to make the changes.
The triathlete should even log the foods he eats for each meal he takes per day. Knowing what foods are giving him the most energy and the least amount of cramping, knowing the fastest and most effective ways of feeding and strengthening his muscles during recovery times is very important to him, for it will tell him how he should eat within 48 hours of the race day and what energy supplements he may want to take with him (like an energy bar, etc).
Yes, a triathlon training log should have everything pertinent to the triathlete's training written in it, no details left out.
